The Subaru Levorg has been shown in full production spec, but details for the Australian version are not yet known.
The 2021 Subaru Levorg has been unveiled in Japan, and CarAdvice can confirm the model will be coming to Australia.
The new Levorg wagon will launch in Japan with a 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine producing 130kW/300Nm, replacing the current 1.6-litre turbo engine – but Subaru Australia communications boss David Rowley has told CarAdvice the local variant will be "considerably different to [the Levorg] in the Japan domestic market".
Mr Rowley added, cryptically, that the new Levorg will be developed to "appeal to an even greater customer base".
This hints at the Australian market getting the smaller 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder expected in the upcoming Impreza and high-riding XV hatch, reported to replace the non-turbo 2.0-litre in the current range.
The smaller engine could help lower the price of the Levorg, which starts at $37,240 plus on-road costs for the current model.
However, the statement from Subaru Australia refers to the Levorg as a "performance wagon," so there is a chance the 1.8-litre could be skipped in favour of – or joined by – the new 2.4-litre turbo engine rumoured for the next-generation WRX.
Whichever engine Australia receives, it's expected the model will get a CVT automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Subaru Japan also announced the Levorg STI Sport at the launch event, but details on the high-performance version have not been fully revealed at this stage.
The new Levorg has a bigger footprint than the outgoing model, with the wheelbase growing by 65mm. Boot space is now 561 litres including 69 litres of underfloor storage, compared to 489 litres in the previous shape, and owners will benefit from a hands-free tailgate.
In the cabin, range-topping versions will receive an 11.6-inch infotainment screen, as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver, while entry-level models are expected to get a 7.0-inch infotainment screen and analogue dials.
An Australia release date has not been announced yet, but a second-half 2021 debut is expected.
