Stinger set for a lightweight makeover as question marks hover over powertrain changes

UPDATE: New photos of the refreshed 2021 Kia Stinger have surfaced since this story was scheduled. We have now added them to the body and revised the words of this story.

The updated 2021 Kia Stinger has been spied on South Korean roads without a hint of camouflage, suggesting a debut could be just weeks away. These latest images come to us via enthusiast site The Korean Car Blog.

As earlier photos have revealed, the refreshed performance liftback sedan will pick up a number of subtle styling tweaks on the outside, while – although difficult to discern here – some minor changes are anticipated for the cabin.

Changes to the front end are limited to revised headlights, with completely redesigned internals and LED signatures. All other aspects of the Stinger's face appear unchanged.

Two revealing photos of the rear, however, show the stinger's new and almost retro-styled LED signature, which also now appears to light up across the width of the boot lid. On the current model, this slim band is cosmetic only.

A lightly updated bumper design can also be seen at the rear, along with larger exhaust tips that will hopefully result in a more resonant exhaust note than that offered with the existing Stinger.

Little else is known about the updated Stinger at this time.

Reports online suggest a move to the Hyundai group's new and more powerful 279kW/530Nm 3.5-litre twin turbo V6, although the company's local arm has told CarAdvice it is "not anticipating any changes" to the Stinger's specification.

Time will tell if that was merely a ruse to deter buyers from holding off on the current 272kW/510Nm 3.3-litre turbo V6 Stinger.
